“My advice is that if you want a long-term relationship, put it out there.”And, she adds, be prepared for online dating to take up a lot of time.
“For many, and particularly in the developing world, it’s not just somewhere to work, shop or communicate with friends, but a credible way of finding a partner in life.”Online dating is huge, says Karol Ward, a therapist who counsels couples and individuals.“The first time out of the gate, a person may dread it and not have any success,” she says.
“But then they get back into it and it seems to work out for them.

D., author of “Still a Family,” says in her experience, the majority of newly divorced people now turn to online dating to meet a potential life partner.
The BBC World Service global poll surveyed close to 11,000 Internet users in 19 countries.
Turns out India and Pakistan have some of the largest numbers of enthusiasts for online dating, with 59% of Indians and 60% of Pakistanis using the Internet to track down a potential partner.
Among other nations, the urge to cyberdate isn’t quite as strong.
Twenty-one percent of Americans use the Internet for finding a partner, as do 16% of South Koreans, 28% of Brits and 27% of the French.“This shows what a major role the Internet now plays in the lives of millions of people around the world,” said Sam Mountford, research director of Globe Scan, the polling firm that conducted the research, in a statement reported on Reuters.
“And since the picture you post on your profile may look better than you look in person, there is a lot of pressure when you finally meet in person.”Ward says one problem with online dating is that people tend to misrepresent themselves, saying they’re just interested in having fun and going out than in getting married and starting a family.
Then they are disappointed when they meet people who aren’t looking for commitment, too.“You think people won’t respond to your profile if you say you want marriage and kids, so you don’t take a chance and go after what you really want,” she says.
But it can put undue pressure on those who hope to meet the perfect match.
“There is pressure to exchange phone numbers and pressure to meet right away, especially if someone is looking to get married,” she says.
