In 2014, Umina Beach Public School purchased over 500 XO laptops for individual student use. These child-friendly laptops have numerous educational activities built-in, as well as being able to connect to the internet.
While the XOs have a variety of apps or programs available, we have enabled wifi access so teachers and students can utilise the vast resources available on the internet.
UPDATE: XO laptops now use Android, the world's most popular smartphone and tablet operating system and app ecosystem.
The overwhelming benefit is that each child in the participating classes have their own laptop to use, five days a week.
Each teacher has been required to complete training to ensure they get the most out of the devices.
Apparently, this happens only with XO-1 models with very old firmware, Q2D05 or Q2D06.
The RTC chip has a “coin cell” backup battery (ML1220) that powers the RTC when the AC and main battery are not present, and this battery can die if the laptop is without power for an extended period of time. This port was not accessible except by disassembling the laptop. This, along with the XO laptops, will provide students with a true 21st century learning experience!I volunteered to try to resurrect a bricked OLPC laptop for the computer science department. The power LED would turn on, but the screen never turned on, not even the backlight.Online research led me to believe the source of the problem was an old firmware and a dead real-time clock (RTC) battery.
